Review of Event:

Howard was in top form and gave his typically great presentation. Don't see how he remembers and identifies all the trees and plants. He presented an excellent slide show. He discussed some really practical matters - including fixes and preventions - and what-not-to-do's. He also presented a lot of great pictures of really classic trees and their surroundings. We actually learned stuff - especially about bare-rooting, problem situations, physical fixes, and the pros and cons of various ornamental trees - plus a lot more really practical stuff.

Moore Tree Care was there to demonstrate the Air-Spade, consequent root-work, pruning and bare-rooting. They contributed some hundreds of dollars' worth of expertise, labor and equipment on existing small trees - installed only a few years ago by the school's landscaper. They went to great effort and expense to demonstrate all of this and gave a running explaination of what they were doing, why they were doing it, and what we were seeing.

Very, very illuminating. While we work alot with tree farms, landscapers, commercial growers, arborists and home owners and tell them what they need to do to fix their problems, we generally don't get into the mechanics of how to actually do it... I found the exhibition to be very worthwhile.

The field demonstration was very interesting, as all of the classic mistakes had been made by the landscaper. After Moore Tree removed the staking and guys (revealing the damage to the trunk), Air-Spaded off the pile of mulch and soil piled around the trees - down to the root-flares - that is typical of many installations, we could actually see the things (girdling roots, upward-growing roots, what the bark looks like underground, etc.) Howard discussed and showed during his presentation.

I was surprised at how fast classic root problems can develop - thought these things took a lot of time with trees... and was interested to find out the importance of pruning - limbs rubbing together will open up the tissues to disease...

Then, there was the discussion concerning the cabling of limbs... Yes, you really missed it....

Coffee and water were served, and K S K Y (Salem Radio Network) had a tent giving away stuff and much-enjoyed candy...

Chambersville Tree Farm was there, providing free Red Oak seedlings (about 2' tall) and offering some really nice and unique ornamental trees (which Howard had discussed) for sale. They had sold out of a lot of things by the time we got by to see them...

By the way, upon sign-in, we got cool tote-bags with cool stuff in them . Will not go into further detail, so as to hopefully make you feel especially bad about not going...

Then, there was the raffle...

We had to drive from Ellis County (about 41 miles, one-way) to get there and found it well worth the trip.

You shoulda been there...

Frank-
