No, I don't have snakes in my grass as far as I know. But I'm asking because there are people who believe I am asking for trouble by not mowing my St Augustine lawn. Here is a picture.

The grass ranges from 3 inches to 30 inches high around the half acre I have with grass. I live in George West, Texas on the edge between the desert and the coastal plains. It is much more like desert here than any gulf influence. There are rattlers in the area and I am on only two chain link fences away from the wild west. Is tall grass an invitation for snakes or is that a myth?

My grass is generally shorter close to the house, taller back near the creek (also on a half acre). Its a mix of Bermuda and native grasses and my three dogs kill several snakes a season. So far (knock wood) all were harmless. I wish they wouldn't kill snakes, but they're outside dogs and they hunt wildlife in the yard.

So, will tall grass make a difference? I doubt it. If there are snakes, there are snakes.

I have not seen any around the house. My dog is blind so she'll never see any. But there is no reason not to have them. So far all I've seen when walking her is skunks and cats.

Kind of a late post but people still read snake stuff..
Snakes will be attracted to and follow the scent of mice and rats. I live in the dallas area, but have property on the coast too. In Matagorda County along the beach, we have lots of Rattle snakes, all kinds of other snakes too, but lots of rattlers.
If I let the coastal grass get long, I see rats scurry out of the way of the mower, and usually see at least 1 snake every other time I mow. I recently choked a 18HP toro ZTR on a 5 ft rattler.. Scared the day lights out of me.
Love most snakes, just not the vipers.

Long grass, junk in the yard. If it attracts and can house mice and rats, you'll have snakes.

Mice and rats would be coming for food and insects. I don't see many insects either. I get about 5 scorpions in the house every year. I've seen one full sized tarantula and a very few little ones.
