Trolamine Salicylate • Trolamine salicylate is a common ingredient found in suntan lotions and some sunscreens. This chemical does not block all the sun's rays; it only blocks the harmful UVA and UVB rays. Safer suntan products that help to create a tan without damaging the skin too much contain trolamine salicylate. Para-Aminobenzoic Acid (PABA) • Both sunblock and suntan lotion contain para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA). Most people do not react to this ingredient, but some people have sensitivities to it. Side effects such as vomiting, rash and nausea can result from PABA exposure. If the suntan lotion contains PADA, do a patch test to see if the product will cause irritation. All you need to do is rub a dime-sized amount into your skin and watch how your body reacts over a 24-hour period. • Many suntan lotions also contain the plant aloe vera. This is one of the more natural and soothing ingredients in the lotion. Aloe vera protects and heals the skin. Aloe is also thick and able to hold other ingredients together well. Aloe is very beneficial for people with sensitive, allergy-prone skin. Hemp Seed Oil • Hemp seed oil is another common ingredient found in more natural suntan lotions. Oil helps to attract the sun. Hemp seed oil is natural and loaded with nutrients and fatty acids, which are beneficial for the skin.
