Note I recently got from a listener. Wonder how common this is. We have a lot of life around our place. I do not use pesticides. I listen to your program on KSKY while driving to church. I was sitting under my oak tree last night and noticed how quiet it was. Over the years I have enjoyed listening to the cicadas and tree frogs sing at night. It was dead silence. Not a sound. Got to thinking how things have changed over the years. 1. When I was a kid growing up in Amarillo at night just about every store where there was a light one could see one or two large toads that would come to eat the bugs. After just about every shower there would be baby toads hopping around all over the place. The puddles would be full of tadpoles. I have not seen a toad or a tadpole for years. 2. One could drive down the highway and there would be a box turtle crossing at least every mile. Now I am lucky if I see one a year. 3. There were horned toads all over our yard. Again its been years since I have seen any. 4. Had a large tub buried in the back yard with a water lilly in it. When it would rain it would catch large black and white salamanders that I enjoyed playing with. I saw the last of these in 1975 in Elgin, Illinois. 5. When I bought my place here between Cisco and Eastland, TX, there were 5 large red scavenger ant hills in the yard and many more in the back pasture. The ones in the yard are gone as are most of them in the pasture. Interestedly even the fire ants seem to be dying out. 6. When I bought this place there were craw dad holes in the yard. Fed them pieces of bacon. Again. All gone. 7. There was a pecan grove around the corner. About an acre. Nice large trees. They all died. 8. The bluebonnettes are also getting scarce and the ones that do blume are rather pathetic. They used to be beautiful. 9. About the only things that thrive anymore are the grasshoppers. They strip the leaves, then the bark, then start on the stems. Times are certainly changing. |
