The following was in one of the industry newsletters I get. It's not surprising but very disappointing that we have so little progress in some of the most important areas. The ironic thing here is that pythium and other fungal diseases rarely are a problem in an organic program, plus they are a piece of cake to cure with organic tools like cornmeal, garlic, hydrogen peroxide and Plant Wash.

"Integrated approach proves best control for Pythium on poinsettias
Plant pathologist Karen Rane at the Univ. of Md. Plant Diagnostic Lab has been receiving many questions about the best controls for Pythium root rot on poinsettias. She advises that it takes an integrated approach to do the job. This includes implementing good sanitation practices to keep the greenhouse clean, running the plants on the dry side and maintaining proper fertility levels without raising soluble salts. Since Pythium is a common soil inhabitant, it can be brought into the greenhouse on unsterilized soil, used pots, dirty tools and benches. Rane said that biological fungicides applied early in the season can provide a good level of root rot control when the amount of inoculum is low. Surface water sources can also contain the pathogen. If a greenhouse has a history of Pythium, fungicide drenches will help protect plants from infection. She said a many Pythium isolates are resistant to Subdue MAXX (mefenoxam), so rotation of fungicides is important. "
