Post subject:  Overseeding with Ryegrass

Saw this scalping operation underway in Irving today. It reminded me that I should comment on my thoughts on overseeding for geen winter grass. The positives are mostly aesthetic - green turf during the dormant season. There is some argument that that the winter grasses help push out weeds but probably all it does is mask the cool season weeds late winter/early spring when the spotty green plants show up against the dormant turf.

Retired A&M turfgrass specialist Bill Knoop and I talked this issue years ago and we still agree that in general there is more negative than positive about overseeding. Most golf course superintendents no longer do it. It's expensive, additional mowing and watering and fertilizing is needed, and most importantly there is substantial competition in the spring when the transition from winter grass to summer grass happens. If the Spring is cool and wet, the ryegrass can last all the way into early summer unless aggressive efforts are used to kill out the winter crop.

I'm too lazy to do it at home or at the office but I know some of you like the fresh green winter color. That's fine. Some commercial properties use it for marketing purposes which makes sense in some cases. But the bottom line is that overseeding warm season grasses with ryegrass is not the best horticultural decision.
