Post subject:  loosening compacted soils w/out tilling

I saw a post asking this question.

DAIKON RADISHES! And any other herb/veg with a prolific tap root, even 'weeds', so long as you top them before seeding if you don't want it to spread.
This method is slow but works.
I have grown soil from compacted driveway areas that were of heavy clay using this over 3-4 yrs. Hope this helps someone.

I think the weeds would be at least as much trouble as the compacted soil and I'd have to grow an awful lot of radishes in the hard packed parts of my yard! I have lots of those deep tap root weeds - that aren't growing where they would do any good. :)
