Post subject:  Lettuce is easy to grow, right?

Q: Lettuce is supposed to be easy to grow, right? We have had the same issue 2 years in a row. Our lettuce seeds sprout to the surface showing 2 small tender leaves about the size of a pin head. Then they just stay like that for several weeks until the heat of summer hits and they just die off. They never grow past sprouting. Both years were in completely different soils and locations. The only commonality I can find is the seed itself. I have searched for answers to this problem, but everyone says "lettuce is easy to grow".

A: Trying to grow it in the summer is the problem. It is a cool season plant that works best when planted in the fall. Here's the info from my Texas Organic Vegetable Gardening Book.
