Fall 2009 Cole Crop with my standard organic soil amendments. [I was organic before you were- 1979] Shredded leaves, chopped alfalfa, DE, Kelp, Rock Phosphate, greensand, Worm castings, egg shells, epsom salts. Transplanted with Yum Yum Mix. Mulched with mixture of shredded leaves, chopped alfalfa, grass clippings. This was a newly made bed filled with a garden loam from a local dirt company. [Both made last summer.] This one had a sparse clover cover [did not get good germination in the summer heat] and fall planted annual rye & hairy vetch in addition to the same fall soil amendments. Spring of '10 amendments: Azomite, Volcanite, Expanded Shale, Cornmeal, Dry Molasses, Yum Yum Mix. I raised the seedlings with Garrett Juice & Thrive [thrive in water used on other seedlings- not intentionally added to coles] and did a couple of soil drenches & one foliar spray after transplanting. [Garrett Juice of course] Beds had lots of earthworms after the cover crops over the winter. Never had them when I mulched over the winter [well a few very small ones] At one point I found a few very small cabbage worms...it was too windy [30 to 40 mph] to spray BT but when I was ready to do that, I could not find any worms! I have never raised coles without having cabbage worms. NO anti pest spray has been used!!! Note the drastic difference in the color & size of the leaves. These cauliflower plants are absolutely gorgeous. I can't stop looking at them. [They are very loved] Attachment: Spring 2010 Cauliflower & Red Cabbage #5.jpg [ 30.91 KiB | Viewed 3834 times ] Spring 2010 Cauliflower.... Slightly [well greatly] wind blown Red Cabbage in upper corner... also with no cabbage worms. I love looking at these beautiful leaves Thank you for spreading the word. Although I have always been organic, the addition of the volcanic rock powders, cornmeal, dry molasses and Garrett Juice has made a very visible difference. I am sure the cover crops also contributed. I am looking forward to this years garden. Thanks again for improving my organic knowledge. I too am spreading the word as best I can.
