Walter Reeves did not endorse this idea and is on the record saying it does not work. This is his website where he states that:

Read Howard's newsletter on this subject........and accept the fact Club Soda does NOT kill Fire ants.

Add another ingredient. BTW, CO2 will not kill an ant colony in those [conc] as they would be evacuating already from the lack of O2 from the rains or invasion.

I do know that if we get enough people to quit eating the blue packets for iced tea, we could have the most potent version of fire ant killer around:

I have been looking into how to utilize this junk for a while it does work, and its another reason not to trust big business. Look further and you will find the people who marketed it last minuted to humans to still make a profit.

I've herd that a box of grits, sprinkled around the mound gets rid of them.

I have had good luck simply pouring boiling water into the center of the mound. It will shock some of the surrounding plants, but once the heat dissipates, the plants bounce back.

I have used grits for years. They either don't like their mound disturbed or it kills them, but there are no more in that spot.

After a long road of error and correction, I've started a new method(again) to get rid of fire ants. I'm mixing vinegar and soda and pouring down on their mounds. Voila, they are dead. I know may be this is not right. But I'm helpless. The only problem is, this solution kills grass.

I have be using oatmeal, right out of the can. I crush it with my hand while covering the mound. Sometimes, it might take two, or three application, but it works fine.
