Post subject:  What female House Wrens like

I am at a behavioral ecologists meeting this week and have enjoyed the poster sessions. Over the next couple of days I'll post a quick note on some of the studies I have heard about.

The House Wren is a common winter resident in Texas, but usually nests a little north of Texas, although I think they do nest in the Guadalupe Mountains.

House Wrens nest in cavities.

A male House Wren may lay claim to more than one cavity.

Female House Wrens find males that control several nesting cavities more attractive than males who only control one nesting cavity.

The study I read about was trying to find out if the female would invest more in raising the young of an attractive male than she did in raising the young of a less attractive male.

In this study, the young of the attractive males grew quicker and seemed to be healthier at an early age, but the weight difference evened out after about 13 days.

I use about a TBL of whole ground cornmeal in my birdbath. It keeps the algae under control & the water sparkling. If you don't change the water often, watch for mosquito larvae.
