A friend sent me a note saying he had a Black-chinned Hummingbird at his feeder, north and east of Lewisville. This is getting fairly far east for Black-chinned Hummingbirds. I would be interested in hearing of other sightings of Black-chinned hummers. They look very much like a Ruby-throat but the males have a dark, purplish throat (gorget). |

I have had a black chin pair since early spring (confirmed by catching the glint of the irridescent purple gorget in the sunlight). I had a pair of ruby throats and then they seemed to be gone for a while but I am seeing them at the feeder once again. I have several hummer-friendly plants so they could be out in the yard. For the last 2 or 3 years I only have a couple or so pairs until the fall migration. |

I have had several at my house in Greenville, about 45 miles NE of DFW. I saw the male once last year and usually only see the females now, along with some ruby throated hummingbirds. Here are a few shots of the black and ruby throated: These don't appear to be posting, so if you want to see them, visit my flickr page at http://www.flickr.com/photos/10092693@N05/ |
