Each fall I do a survey of the grocery stores, big box stores etc to see what bird seed is available. If you are not experienced with feeding birds, there are a lot of poor choices. Many of the cheaper products include a lot of millet and milo (not popular with many species) and some offerings do not clearly state what kinds of seeds are included.

If purchasing at grocery stores or similar, and you are not experienced with feeding birds, consider the following options.

For hanging feeders stick with black-oil sunflower. Often available at seed and feed stores at a very good price.

Feed milo or millet on the ground or low platform feeders for winter sparrows, juncos or doves. Most like sunflower too if you want to stick with a single offering.

Mixes can be good for hanging feeders but check with specialty stores such as Wild bird Centers or Wild Birds Unlimited for the best quality and seasonal selections.

I have good success in the fall and winter with suet. It is inexpensive and attracts a variety of birds without being too appealing to House Sparrows.

If you fill your hanging feeder with a mix of seeds rich in milo, millet or some un-named seed type you will probably be disappointed with the results.
