Haven't fed birds in several (ok, 20) years but as the slush was falling the other day I noticed that the chickadees that nest under my roofline are overwintering and look fairly miserable in this colder than usual Texas winter.

Good time to hang some feeders? What type - seed or suet? I'm assuming the latter for these guys.

Try black-oil sunflower using hopper, tube or platform feeder.

Suet is also good, and inexpensive.

Hi CHF,
Man o man anytime I put down some seeds even when I haven't done so in a while (OK it has been <20 yrs for me tho) not even a few hours later the birds are there. I inherited a caged lovebird, and this peeper is almost 15yrs old. She is still picky about the seeds she wants today... So I just take her leftovers from her dish and collect them in a jar and then take it out to the back yard. Soon the local birdies (except the grackles my dogs chase them away and now they know not to come here.) gather and peep and have fun and stay in the big ol ficus tree out there and stay all day till the sun goes down.
I live in the coastal bend of Texas so we have an abundance of birds all the time. They sure seem hungry.
I have heard (birdzilla prob knows this better than me) that certain bird like certain foods. so there ya go.. I just had to pipe in cause I cant keep my mouth (or fingers) closed and I love the outside birdies as well

A dog that only chases grackles? - now that's a well-trained dog!

LOL - I'm not sure they'd appreciate my bird's leftovers.... though the image of a chickadee trying to figure out how best to attack a brazil nut is quite funny (I have a somewhat massive macaw).

Think I will try the suet and black oil sunflower since if they manage to go to seed they'll be easy to spot and pull out. Thanks guys, poor buggers sure don't look happy this time of year!
