I would like to spread compost over a soccer field (2 acres). We can get a fairly good price on 90 cubic yards of good compost from Living Earth here in Dallas (I looked at it and it looked good to me). However, I'm not sure how we are going to spread 90 cubic yards. I had thought that we could rent a manure spreader of some sort, but I've not been able to find one. Are there any companies who do this sort of thing? I really don't want to tackle this by myself. I can handle the compost tea, but 90 yards is a small mountain! Thanks for any help.

How about filling a low boy trailer with compost and getting 2-3 teenage boys or girls to follow the trailer across the field with shovels. All they have to do is just fling it out there, it doesn't have to be a perfect spread. What about an eagle scout project?
The city of Plano rents a manual compost spreader but it may be too small.

We did a test with a couple of yards of compost and with a front loader to do the initial placement and then shoveling/raking it out. We probably spent 6 man hours doing that. We want to do 45 times more (90 yards). That's a lot of work! It can be done, but if we could rent/hire some helpful equipment, I think that it would be worthwhile.

I definitely vote for blowing it on.

Silver,
I would be very interested on how the compost works out for you and how you spread it. 90 cubic yards sounds like a lot on 2 acres, but I didn't do the math.

Here's the math. You need no more than 1 cubic yard per 1,000 square feet. An acre is about 43+ thousand feet. Double that and 90 yards is a good round number.

Thanks David...
I was visualizing it as 12-13 7 cu.yd dump trucks and it sounded like a lot...
I definitley would not want to spread that by hand!

We tailgated approx. the same amount over an area with the trucks and then moved it around evenly with a spring rake with a small tractor. This was unimproved turf tho and not a soccor field.
It was quicki and easy considering the volume and size of area !
