Help! How do I eliminate crabgrass from bermuda and fescue grass. Have tried hand digging and lost the battle...the yard won. Live in Tulsa, OK and have been growing and gardening organic since 1998. The lawn is a different story. Other than when I plant new grass, I use compost from my composter. Unforntunately, I live between two yards, one is all round-up and chemical fertilizers, and the back and other side just don't care, contributing to the crabgrass/weed problems. I do not have a sprinkler system so I try do apply things when rain is predicted or hand water.

Sorry to hear you're frustrated. :?

Give us a little more info.
Are you organic? How long?
How do you water/fertilize?
And where are you?

Water deeply and infrequently. Crabgrass requires continual moisture or frequent waterings for a few days in a row to germinate the seed. By watering deeply you will not have to water more than once a month in the cool months and once a week in the heat of summer. That gives the soil surface time to dry completely and prevents seed germination.

Mow the fescue at the highest setting and reseed/overseed every fall. That will give you the most dense turf. Crabgrass will never get a start in turf like that.

Mow the bermuda at the lowest setting. Crabgrass can creep right into bermuda mowed low; however, it will not get as good a foothold because the bermuda will be more dense when mowed low. Also fertilize the bermuda every month to make it even more dense.
