Post subject:  Raised beds

Hi to all gardeners! New to the forum and needed some advice. My husband has made one raised bed that is 3' wide and 42' long. He will be making another and later this year we will rasie a hoop house over it for shade cloth and then try to winter some plants this winter.

My question is that our soil is pure red clay and my husband does not want that in the veggie beds. What can be added with the compost to allow moisture retention and nutrients for the DFW area. We live 30 west of Fort Worth. I had read in Square Ft Gardening to mix compost, peat and vermiculite. Now after reading some of your posts I am confused. Please help! :?:

Please, NO peat and vermiculite. Here is the link to proper bed preparation. Follow the instructions here and you'll be off to a good start.

Investing in some beneficial nematodes for the area and putting up trichograma wasps will give you some added protection for your new garden. And it would be worth your while to read each of the guides on the guides page.

Good luck, and happy gardening!
