Post subject:  Cutting back Vinca Major

Hi: I'm new here. I have used Vinca Major as our ground cover on a side hillside and front sloping shallow hill. We installed this ourselves and use soaker hoses for water supply during the dry (non rainy) season here in the East Bay area of California (25 miles east of San Francisco). VM does great with very little care required, and most of the care is with replacing some of the soaker hoses that have deteriorated and developed leaks and tears.
I read in Sunset Western Garden Guide that Vinca should be cut back occasionally to encourage growth.

My wife and I disagree on how frequently "occasionally" means (like every 4 years, every 2 years, every 10 years)?? The Vinca does not have a problem growing here. I do have a problem with the gardner whom she hires to cut back the VM because his crew uses weed-whackers (we have a 4-cycle whacker), but they don't pay attention to the soaker hoses and have destroyed some in the past.

Anyone out there have Vinca Major. What do the professional gardners recommend re cutting them back? And what is your long term experience in using soaker hoses for watering them?
