Hello all... Hope someone has info for me..... I have a potted, outdoor, mostly in the sun, Red Hibiscus (sp?). I have noticed tiny white bugs and white power on the stems? Are they harmfull to the plant? If so how can I treat the problem.... Thanks so much Craig |

Could these be whiteflies? According to the Texas Bug Book by Howard Garrett and Malcolm Beck, '[Whiteflies] feed on the underside of leaves and secrete a honeydew that leads to sooty mold.' Phosphorus deficient soils are a haven for these pests, so an application of colloidal phosphate to the soil would be in order. To kill on contact, spray garlic tea or garlic pepper tea and seaweed. |

It sounds like what the Texas Bug Book calls leaf hoppers. I talked to Bob Webster about it because I was having trouble finding anything that looked like it on the Internet. He said that these were so innocent that nothing needs to be done. If they are a fairly neutral bug, then I can see why there's nothing on the Internet about them. They just make the plant look bad. |
