Post subject:  ID black & red bugs and/or disease on yucca plant!
Round hard shelled black & red bugs have been sucking the juice out of yucca plant. The leaves are drying up and dying from the tips inward. And moving from the bottom of the plant to the top. I have sprayed with carrot juice and orange oil, and also washed with Lemon Joy, but they seem to be thriving! Can anyone tell me what the bugs are called and how do I get rid of them? I purchased a spray bottle of Plant Wash, but that wouldn't even start to do this large plant. (I couldn't find the product in a concentrate form, only a premixed spray bottle.) I guess the plant could also have a disease plus the bugs. I need a solution quick or it will surely die this summer. Been spraying it for about 4 years and they only get worse. They showed up in the late winter time this year in Central TX.

Plant wash is nothing more than a soap like any liquid soap. The one I like to use for the garden is generic baby shampoo from Walmart (Equate brand). It is much more generic than Johnson and Johnson Baby Shampoo and less expensive.

Otherwise, yucca is a highly specialized plant. Entirely different species of yucca live at insignificantly different altitudes on hillsides, and they only live at that altitude. It could easily be that your plants are not environmentally specialized for your location. Where do you live and where did you get the plants? What I'm thinking is that your plants are being stressed so much from living in the "wrong" place that they are susceptible to the bugs. I am also thinking that the bugs you have are similarly highly specialized to live only on stressed yucca.

But that would not stop me from spraying with something !!! I'd spray with the soap but also milk and/or liquid seaweed diluted at 3 ounces per gallon of water (Ortho adjustable hose end sprayer dial setting). Spray all the surfaces of the plant. I realize it is hard to get underneath yucca leaves, but give it the old college try.
