Post subject:  Millipede Invasion

For the first time since we built our home 5 years ago, we are being invaded by millipedes. Each night thousands of millipedes leave the bermuda lawn and travel across the patio and several hundred find their way into the house. This started about October 15 and has continued through today (10-26) Why, since this has never happened before, are these millipedes on the move? Is it weather driven? Is it a sign of a cold winter to come?

This time of year tarantulas go walkabout, and since I have a colony in my yard, they end up outside on the walls and walks and occasionally in the street. Sometimes in the house, but they're larger and don't have too many gaps they'll fit through. I catch an release any in my house (and the neighbors know to call me if they find them in their houses.) I suspect there are lots of things that start moving around or preparing for the weather change, we just don't see all of them.

Howard's Texas Bug Book says they like moist areas and will break down organic matter, and can be pests in eating fruit in the garden that is on the ground. Organic control: "Dry soil out with wood ashes or natural diatomaceous earth. Drench soil with citrus tea if millipedes become a problem."

If you're interested in learning more about this, do get a copy of the Bug Book. Of the various Garrett texts I own, that is the one I refer to most often.

Tarantulas would be welcomed!!! Actually, I have no problem with the Millipedes (except in my bedroom), but am very curious as to why they picked this year to invade. I know there must be a reason, I'm just too dull to know what it is.
