I found two of these little buggers (about 1 inch long) chomping on a very young crape myrtle, Black Diamond cultivar. Might anyone out there recognize this or have perhaps seen it before?

A search in Google (with -tobacco and -tomato to remove the most charismatic green hornworms from the search) brings up a darker hornworm called Hyles lineata. The white-lined sphinx moth. You may want to look further - that orange head is pretty distinctive.

I think I hit it the first try. Wikipedia gives a large range, including Texas.

Here is another Hyles lineata photo. I am guessing that there is a range of colors for this one. If this isn't it, it's close. It gives you a starting place for a further search.

NW...you always reply back like a teacher giving the answer while showing how to do it. I think that is grand. Thanks again.

Once an interpretive naturalist, always an interpretive naturalist. I worked for the National Park Service for many seasons, uniform, stetson hat and all. :)
