| Post subject: | Are chiggers on increase in DFW area? |
I'm accustomed to mosquitoes in yard, but am suddenly finding "bites" in places where clothing binds (eg: belt line) and in the "unmentionable" places around groin and armpits, etc. Remember this was where chiggers were worst in Texas Panhandle. Anyone aware of chiggers starting/increasing in DFW? What can we do about them, organically? |

Welcome to the Dirt Doctor site! If you look at the home page, right under the video box, you'll see a green button that is the link to the Library of Organic Information. Click on it and you'll find information about many topics, including treatments for chiggers. In the "for what it's worth" category, for years I've used a couple of skin care products to repel chiggers (Avon Skin So Soft and Jean Nate after bath liquid). Avon's Skin So Soft has a new insect repellent formula called Avon SKIN-SO-SOFT Bug Guard PLUS IR3535® Insect Repellent. You can find it at Amazon and Avon and other places. The extra ingredient is "Picaridin" which comes up in a search as this. It's supposed to be as or more effective as DEET. I'm going to run this product by Howard to see what he thinks, I just heard about it last week. |

They might be. A friend was ate up with them on his calfs after going thru some tall grass. |

If you walk through tall grass this time of year in Texas you will get covered with chiggers. I don't think there are any more than there were before, I think you're coming into contact with the conditions that they favor. Keep the grass short if you don't want chiggers in the yard. And don't walk through tall grass without wearing a repellent if you want to avoid them. |
