Some tiny flies appear in my kitchen. Someone told me we bring the larvae home when we buy bananas. I use orange oil to clean ( works better than household cleaners, costs less and also disinfects) I put about 1 oz orange oil per 2 quarts of water. When these flies land on a surface, I spray and the flies scatter fast, and most don't come back. A couple of sprays around the kitchen seems to work to keep them away, until the next bunch shows uip. What are these insects I have looked up flies of all kinds and cannot find them. |

Those are fruit flies or are the flies that like houseplant soil. Do you have houseplants? |

Yes, I have houseplants but not in the kitchen. they seem to hover near any fruit or the compost pot, which is covered. |

Gnats are a nuisance and they get into various places around the house once they're established. They're probably in the houseplants and enjoying the bananas and kitchen compost bowl. Take a look at the organic library entry for Fungus Gnats. |

Make sure you allow the soil in your houseplants to dry before watering. A friend used white vinegar down the kitchen sink, and to spray the gnats with and it killed them all. |
