White flies have eaten all my morning glories and I just can' seem to stop them. What do you recommend? |

Diluted garlic powder, hot pepper powder, canola oil, and a little liquid soap tea. |

White flies are incredibly resistant to commercial pesticides - unlike small children. A nursery friend of mine (Ok, so i sent his kids to ivy League schools) told me that white flies have largely developed in nurseries and commercial flower producer's greenhouses - evolving to resist dang near everything. I found two things that work - Ultrafine oil and Neem oil. Ultrafine is a parafinnic wax that I am sure will get deonounced as a petroleum distillate but neem oil is natural. Here is the cool part - both work the same way on those nasty whiteflies that ADORE hydrangea's and other plants. They don't attack the nervous system like pesticides... no, no no that would be too good for these rotten little leaf killers. It suffocates them. Slowly. Why kill a whitefly quickly and painlessly when you can torture the little SOB who chewed your roses up? yes, I am a vindictive organic gardener - i want whiteflies and fireants to die as slowly and painfully as possible before they are digested by my bio-active soil. Here's what happens - the oil coats thier little lungs so they can't breathe and the oil disintegrates thier exoskeloten so they dry out and die. not sure about you, but on the 'ways to die list' I would imagine that this one has to suck bigtime. Bonus round? Both products are also great on blackspot, powdery mildew and seem to help plants retain moisture in these brutal Dallas summers. If that ain't enough, it gives the leaves a bit of shine and lustre... Save the chem warfare c***, in this case there are safe products that work great. I also recommend anything Cap'n Al suggests with regard to teas... just don't let the neighbors see you pee on the compost pile at night. |
