Post subject:  Help me to identify these guys
I need help in identifying these pests. :( They started out on my magnolia tree but have spread. I have picked them off, sprayed them off with water, used orange oil, garrett juice with garlic and I even have tons of lizards. But these big things don't move so I think the lizards are confused. If someone could help me to identify, then I might be able to get rid of them. If the link below doesn't work, send me your email and I will email the pic.

I want to know too. You're in my neck of the woods, and if those show up I wouldn't know what they were. :shock:

It almost looks like a moth caterpillar of some sort. Unless my perception of size is off; from what I've determined from the picture.

The largest ones are only about 1/4" in length.

In that case they look like maybe they are mealy bugs. I had some of them on my Hibiscus plants.

Thanks for the link....I have looked at these. I see similarities but it doesn't look exactly like that. Maybe I just can't see it. Can someone else compare the two pics and tell me if they are the same??

Been in touch with someone from Bioganic. They don't know what this bug is either. I'm assuming no body else does, not even Howard. So I'm going to try the Bioganic spray as soon as it stops raining. I'm told that it won't hurt my lizards and frogs. Keep your fingers crossed!

You need to let the other shoe drop! Now that you know what it is, what did you do to treat them, and did it work?

Post subject:  Cottony Cushion Scale
I have applied 2 applications of Bioganic because I was told they were safe for my lizards. Unfortunately, it will kill all insects, good and bad. I have picked hundreds of these things off also. Was told that there could be up to 800 eggs in each female!! Will let everyone know. By the way, the person who finally was able to help me identify (and I went to alot of different sources) was Lucy Harrell at http://www.allaboutorganicgardeningstx.com There is going to be a free organic class this Wednesday night at 7 pm at Designs in Nature in Ft. Worth. Since she helped me, I was thinking about going to see if I could learn anything else. Will keep everyone posted on what happens with these guys. Also, was told that there are plants to incorporate into my landscape that repel these pests such as salvia greggii. :D

So it's a sort of good news/bad news answer. I'm glad to see that salvia greggi is beneficial--though I knew it already for many other reasons. I have tons of it around my yard. It's one of my favorites--inexpensive, grows fast, attractive, xeriscape, durable. What more could you ask for?

Now I wonder what the lantana repels? I also have lots of that--more than I planned, but it likes it here and grows huge. (Ought to go looking for a lantana thread rather than contributing to thread drift.) I will note, though, that both of these have interesting smells. Probably part of the repellant nature of them.

Since discovering that my pests were cottony cushion scales, I have picked and picked, sprayed 2 applications of BIOGANIC on the affected plants and gone back with doses of Garrett juice and sick tree treatment. I am happy to say that things are looking good. I did not harm my lizards, even saw a ladybug a couple of days ago........and am happy to say that I noticed a praying mantis on my pentas today!! :D
