Post subject:  lil gecko buddies

as someone previously said
I think benign neglect spared a lot of the wildlife
that is my situation and I think it is grand. I have TONs of gecko pals and my boyfriend is able to catch a few at his greenhouse on occasion. Those special fellas make it into the house. My cats are too dumb and slow to catch those rapid runners so they are fat, safe and happy in my plant room and in all of my cabinets and crawl spaces. No grating cricket tunes at night... just the sweet sound of gecko songs!
Not a single roach to be found. I had only one small fela outbreak and that would be really the only "pest" I have seen this year.

Well, several weeks later and the transfer of three geckos has hopefully been achieved. I thinned my batch scientifically (i.e. those I could catch!) and they were sent to Arlington Heights in a Hummus container and a margarine tub. I don't know how to tell the *** (especially on the fly--they are fast!) so I went with the law of averages--if you catch at least three, you're BOUND to have both sexes represented!

I hope you'll report back if they stick around and start feasting on your bugs.

Interesting posts on geckos and roach control. I starting capturing the little critters at work a few years ago and turned them loose in my yard. Now, they are everywhere, including a few which somehow manage to get into the house. I wanted them for roach and other bug control, since I have an inordinate amount of asian jasmine ground covering where the roaches "seem" to thrive. I also have gone "cold turkey" on the chemicals and have seen a return of earthworms and frogs, so I'm sure it's been conducive to the survival of the geckos.

None the less, does anyone know if these "geckos" have been imported (intentionally or accidentally) over the past few decades, or what? I've been in the North Texas area for several decades and never saw the creatures until 5 or 6 years ago, and that wasn't around my home until I took them there. I thought I was the only one to even have them until I started reading these posts a few months ago.

Anyway, if anyone has the answer as to how they got started here, I would sincerely appreciate hearing about it. Thanks.

I understand they are actually called Mediterranean House Geckos and were indeed introduced. How, I'm not sure. I still have plenty of the native lizards, so the geckos seem to be benign in the environment. Perhaps the native lizards eat them also?

I am encouraged to see that "pseudogardener" is catching geckos at work and taking them home. I have started doing that too, but was not sure if they would survive in my garden. At first I would catch them and take them outside the building and let them go, but since they spray bug poison monthly here, I figure that's sort of dooming the geckos anyway, so I have starting taking them home. So far I've only got 4 and haven't seen them since I put them in the garden, but hopefully as I get more they will establish a colony.
