Please help...I have 6 spirea bushes (bridal veil) they are about 3 years old. As you know we have had a very hot and dry summer here in central Texas...the bushes are turning brown and leaves are dropping fast! I thought it was because of the drought but looking on line, they can get fire blight. Could this be my problem? How far down can I pune them to save them? They are sooo beautiful and I will be sooo sad to loose them. Am I too late? |

Personally, I'm not pruning anything right now. It's bad enough to have the drought, but to start cutting off bits will just stress them more. In my opinion. I'm saving my pruning until the cool weather. Spirea isn't native down here, that I recall. It was commonly found in my native Pacific Northwest. You may simply have exceeded the zones in which that plant can live. Can you give more information about the plants, photos perhaps? |

I have tried to post pictures but I am unable to...I have read where I should spray my bushes with a streptomycin antibiotic wetable powder. Would this cause harm to the bushes if they don't have fireblight? Do you know where I might be able to get this or maybe something better or comparable? I am getting desperate...................The bushes haven't lost all their leaves but look very brown with few light yellow leaves here and there. They look like they are trying to live but the heat and sun is really taking its toll. Any suggestions would be very helpful.... |

Yes I was watering them every other day...we are now in a stage 2 mandatory water conservation. We can now only water 2 days a week between 10pm and 8am. I have been watering them for about 10-15 min at a slow not drip but a little faster. Do you think it is the heat or fireblight? Thank you so much for trying to help!! I love these bushes and for the past couple of years they have been beautiful!! You can see they are quite large...I bought them in 2 gallon pots (they were small) and have not had any trouble until this year. They did not flower as much and not as long as they had before. They grew alot last year...never really fertilized them. Any suggestions?? |

I suggest you dig down about 6" right next to one and feel how moist the soil might be. You may need to increase the amount of time you are watering but only do it 2x a week. Scratch the limbs with your nail and see if it's still bright green underneath. If it is, then it's just the leaves burning up. At the nursery where I work, we had to move many full-sun shrubs into the shade because they were getting scorched....even the hollies! |

Thanks I will dig and see...but I'm pretty sure I'm watering enough... We are praying for rain this weekend...we have a chance Fri-Mon!!!!! Do you think I should prune them back....of course I'll wait till spring... |
