Greetings – Within the last month I have begun undertaking a total organic program, both in our flower beds and lawn. Our lawn has been neglected for several years and seems to be quite compacted. My question – Is it ever too late in the summer to introduce BNs to the lawn? My concern is that it’s too hard and keeping it wet enough for them to get established properly. Also, how many days after application must I keep watering to promote growth? Thanks you in advance. |

They say if the soil is wet enough to grow grass, it is wet enough for BN. Deep watering is the solution to compaction. I realize you cannot deep-water a compacted soil, but you need to work on it. Water to the point of runoff until you can water for an hour at a time. Use compost as a mulch. On turf use only 1 cubic yard per 1,000 square feet or you risk smothering the grass. Sweep it off with a push broom - a rake is way too much work. Mow your grass at the mower's highest setting (unless you are growing bermuda, then do the opposite). Use organic fertilizer. All these suggestions will soften your soil and give you great drought tolerance/resistance. They will also allow your BN to live a full and productive life in your soil. |
