Post subject:  "Ground wasps"

In the last couple months I've seen a growing number of red & black furry bugs crawling around in my lawn and garden. They're 1/2" to 1" long, segmented, seem fairly skitish, yet look just like a wasp w/o wings.

Years ago someone told me they had a kick (sting) like a mule.

What are these critters, and should I cease to go bare-footed? :?

I believe you are describing what ranchers call a cow killer. Take a look at this picture and let me know.

Thank you for the great pictures. And they are right on, darn it!

Used to see these critters very occasionally. Now seems they're all over the neighborhood this year. I see one or more everytime I'm out.

So much for going barefoot in the lawn anymore. :cry:
