Post subject:  Snake Repellants?

We live out in the country and have a small pond with a few ducks in it. The ducks continue to lay eggs but their eggs have been disappearing due to a possible 'water moccasin' (?) that we have seen in the water. I have heard that sprinkling black pepper or red pepper on or around the eggs will deter the snakes from going after them. Is that true? Does putting mothballs in with the eggs work? Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Eggs are eaten by every animal in the world. Are you sure you have a moccasin? If so, I suggest you patrol the area with a .38 caliber anything filled with snake shot. Even if the ducklings hatched, the snake would get them one at a time. I think you can get snake shot at most sporting goods stores when you go to town.

I wonder if a Hav-a-heart trap would hold a snake? You could put a hen's egg in it as bait.

My grandmother planted mint all around the house, claiming that it kept the snakes away. I don't have any personal experience with it....

I had a friend with a chicken coop and a snake got in and ate several eggs before we shot it. Since then, I have heard that snakes will not cross cedar mulch. Dont know if it true but you might try laying a cedar circle around the nest. I would say 6 to 12 inches wide. But like one of the others said, the snake may get them once they hatch. Good luck! 8)
