Post subject:  Fire ant repellant?

While weeding or removing unwanted grasses in overgrown beds it can often be difficult or impossible to see fire ant mounds until they are all over my feet, arms etc.

I'd love to hear there is an organic solution I could spray my self with that might repel these pests to any degree. I understand the real solution is to rid my property of the ants but until that I'd like a bit of defense in the fight.

Yes long pants, high socks, long sleeves and gloves will go far in this but I like to wear a bathing suit so quick hops in the pool to cool off are easy to do. (Yes reapplication of any repellant would be required.)

Thanks.

Ants hate cinnamon, mint, or vinegar, among other things. These are the easiest things to apply on your skin, if you can stand the smell. You could try getting oils or oil extracts of these things to apply to your skin, but chances are they may rub off pretty easily. Also, chances are that if you disrupt a fire anthill, they are going to defend and crawl on your skin anyway for the sake of their colony. Otherwise, just avoid them until you can get proper pest control to eliminate them.
