Post subject:  Wasps

I live in the "country" on 5 acres with a 1 acre pond. We have been having lots of wasps hanging around the front and back porches.. We have knocked down paper wasp nests and mud dauber nests but others appear to be inside the vinyl siding. Some of the "pests" are a bright neon navy blue, some are mostly red and others I can't tell. Since the siding is vinyl, we cannot paint it the blue/green color that is recommended to discourage them.

First, what are the red wasps? They are fairly aggressive and bother us and the hummers at the feeders, even chasing them off at time.

What are the neon navy ones?

We also have some yellow jackets but they are not around as much. I steer clear of them!

Any suggestions to discourage the little buggers? I know most wasps are beneficial but....... if they com into the house, they are DEAD!

Thanks. planosmith in Arkansas

The wasps probably have a small nest somewhere inside, there are a variety of DIY pest control methods that you could use to deter them, such as using mint oil or detergent around the area you think the wasps are (the alleged nest area).

As for what type they are, it sounds like red paper wasps and blue mud daubers, but can't be exactly sure if there are no pics.

If they are still apparent, then be sure to consult a specialist to at least find where they are commuting to so their nest does not grow larger.
