| Post subject: | Nolo Bait |
I bought Nolo Bait to help cut down on my cricket population, but after reading the label & product brochure, I'm confused. The brochure says it's safe to use around children & pets and that it is environmentally safe. I've read about it in organic books and forums, & it is carried at the 2 nearest organic suppliers in my area. But the label has all kinds of scary warnings about not applying around kids & animals, wearing protective clothing when applying, washing quickly if it gets on your skin, washing protective clothing separately from other clothes, & not washing the empty container out into the regular wastewater. What gives? Can someone clarify for me whether this is something I should use since I have small children in my yard (and I'm dogsitting for a friend's dog this week)? I don't want to use anything that could be hazardous, even if it is considered organic. Thanks... Jen |

Jen- A word about labels in general. Stepladders have warning on them advising people that they might fall off and hurt themselves. Orange oil is made from orange peels but they have to tell people not to pour it in their eyes. Hair dryers have a warning not to immerse in water. We live in "sue society"; expect almost anything on a warning label. Now to your question. Nolo bait is a bacteria specific to grasshoppers. It has no effect on humans or pets or wildlife or watersheds but because it is a bacteria it comes with mild warnings. If a bird eats an infected grasshopper it will not harm the bird. The wheat bran flakes it is attached to are dusty and should not be inhaled. That has nothing to do with the bait, it's the carrier. I feel safe using this product but you should ask the manufacturer or retailer for an MSDS (material safety data sheet) so you can get all the effects of the product. |

...Nolo bait is a bacteria specific to grasshoppers... Sorry to be picky about this but Nolo, Nosema Locustae, is a Protozoan not a Bacteria. I do agree with Tony M that if you have doubts about any product biological or not ask the manufacturer for the MSDS.

cwilson- Not pickey at all, thanks for the clarification. I might add one other thing about the labeling of nolo bait. Nolo Bait is registered with the EPA in the category of insecticide. CAUTION labels are the category of insecticide product labels that are the lowest in toxicity, which is the category that Nolo Bait is placed in. Because it is an EPA registered product the label must contain standardized label headings and wording such as "Precautionary Statements" and Hazards to Human and Domestic Animals", etc. Tony M |
