I've got a "screen" of red-tipped photinias on one side of my house. They have not looked good for the last couple of years - they start growing ("red-tipping") and then they get black-spot and then a few weeks later, the cycle starts again. My wife is saying that I need to cut down the rtps and start again with some other plant that doesn't have the problem.

Is there something else that I can do? I'm thinking that maybe the black-spot will only attack plants doing poorly so maybe I can do something to the soil. Maybe some of that cornmeal stuff. I don't really want to cut the things down - they are the right height and, when fully leaved out, are a superb screen.

Any ideas?

The problem with the photinias is in the root of the plant and this is the area you must focus on.
Go to the information center on this web site and you will find the treatment for the solution to the problem if they are not too far gone.

We just ripped our two photinas out of the ground. One had its roots firmly wrapped around our water pipes. They are horrific plants. Have you ever smelled them in bloom? It's nauseating!
