Post subject:  meal worms in rabbit manure?

I had some rabbit manure that over wintered in a bag in the garage. When I emptied out the bag today I discovered what looks like meal worms by the 100's. If these are meal worms will they or the beetles be hazardous to plants? I put some in the bird feeder : ) If they aren't meal worms any idea what they are - they are about an inch long.

Are they these? If so, they are soldier flies and you are fortunate to have them, wonderful little vermicompost makers.

The ones I have are lighter more tan colored. does this sound right? I'm glad to know they aren't hazardous to the garden and appreciate your reply and the photo you posted. I'll check out your web site. thanks.

I have seen them both tan colored and dark colored, probably related to maturity or what they are eating. They sometimes get in my worm bins to "help along" the decomposition process and I always find it in my compost--good critters with no known disease vectors.
