RE: a Crepe Myrtle Pest

Hello,

I searched both the Ornamental and Pests/Disease forums but found no usable information. (The crepe myrtle in question may be 30-50 years old maximum.)

PROBLEM: I recently noticed the growing presence of a gossamer like covering following the contours of some of the limbs and branches. Upon examining a fully developed covered area, small, (1/32nd of a inch), dark brown creatures can be seen scurrying about within. This gossamer like covering is bypassing any foliage for now, and is woven very closely to the limb or branch as opposed to a bag worms nest.

Currently I am thinking of removing as much of the material as I can using a high pressure water hose. Then spraying the entire tree with something. However, because I do not know what this pest is, I am not sure what is best to use.

REQUEST: Any informed data and/or suggestions would be very much appreciated. I have access to: 1) Potassium Bicarbonate 2) Neem oil, and 3) Orange Oil. Thoughts or Suggestions anyone?

Every bug that I have seen moving "fast" are good one's. The bugs that move "slow" are usually problems.

First, thank you for the reply.
Interesting response. For different reasons, I started wondering if 'maybe these are helpful bugs'.

the 'web' covered areas seem to originate in the crotch of trunks, branches and limbs. this is a very old crepe myrtle (possibly 53); and the while the skin on the woody parts scales off, it 'looks' very old. The little guys are taking off a thin layer of skin and what they leave behind looks almost like new. Nature's own Exfoliation 8) ; and free, of course. Ya gotta love her.
