Is it possible to control cockroaches the same as with indoor ants? Sugar and boric acid bait.

If not, is there a good way to control these pesky little creatures?

No sugar baits will not be effective on roaches. Most likely you are dealing with American Roaches or what most people just call water bugs. You can control them by using a peanut butter and boric acid bait but the real key to controlling them is by excluding the roaches from entering the structure. There are multiple ways to do this but usually by treating the entry points( weep holes, door jams, etc.) with DE or boric acid dusts will typically take care of the problem. If you are dealling with smaller roaches i.e. german roaches then you will need to bait them out.

I've never used anything except plain old boric acid. I have roaches living in the yard but not in the house for going on 30 years now.

Every time I get the opportunity to open up a wall or move an appliance, I'm sure to dust in some boric acid before finishing the job. I dust regularly in the garage to keep the bugs out and thence their predators (mice and rats). Whenever I see one disappear into a crack, I dust into the crack. Usually I'll find the dead ones then in a few days.

Keep the boric acid out of the soil, though. Excess boron will ruin your soil.
