So all the big box stores all sell lava rocks at four bucks for half a cubic foot. They are in their 1-inch to 3-inch diameter sizes.

What is the cheapest and easiest way to grind up these lava rocks to make lava sand?

Lava sand is what is left behind from the lava rock business, but lava sand is also so dense and heavy in the package (compared to the rock) that moving and shipping it adds to the cost.

Think about the amount of time it is going to take you to smash lava rocks to make lava sand. Maybe you put a few rocks under a heavy plank of plywood and drive on it then sweep up the remains. Maybe you find a way to confine the outward splash and smash the stones one at a time with a sledge hammer.

Now think about how much you pay yourself an hour to do any task. Is it worth X dollars to spend all of that time smashing rocks (hard labor!) instead of buying a bag of already crushed lava sand? You're paying for convenience and for someone else's time and heavy machinery to smash the rock.

What about a wood chipper? I've heard hearsay and legends of salesmen putting bricks into wood chippers. Is this true or a myth?

The only reason I ask is because there is no lava sand within 500 miles of where I am. I can get 40lbs of it shipped for 23 dollars, which is quite expensive.

What's my best option?

A.) Buy lava sand at $23 for 40lbs.
B.) Possibly crush lava rock into lava sand.
C.) Walk 500 miles and then walk 500 more.
D.) Please help.

Pity the poor wood chipper after rocks were dropped in it, and I imagine it could throw them with deadly force.

Did you query our organic listings?

WHOA! This might be a good lead! Thanks! Hey, I bet they could special order in some stuff, and it'd be real affordable for the customer, right? That's how retail works, right? I am VERY HAPPY right now! This might work! I'll be making some phone calls!
