Hello I live in Florida and am having something devastating happening to my corn. It is about 18-24 inches tall and this morning I went out and found four plants laid over about 3 inches from the soil. I pulled one up and opened it up and the stalk was mush inside for about 3 inches where it fell over. It hasn't been windy this last week so I don't think that was it. I saw no sign of bugs. Does anyone no what could be happening?

How much water are they getting?

We got several inches of rain last week in a short period of time. I have the area pretty heavily mulched with alfalfa so the soil is quite moist. I was concerned with the drainage of the soil. Do you think that could be it? The wind has picked up today and over half have blown over now. Looks like I might lose it all. :(

I seem to recall this happened to some people last year on this forum. I think it's a combination of wet soil and high winds. I don't grow corn but will do some searches to see if there's hope of recovery!!

I think that my corn drowned. I dug down under one of the plants and the soil was soaking wet. That was after 4 days with no rain and no watering. I could squeze it and get water to run out. The soil here has a hard clay about 8-10 inches down that is holding the water apparently. I thought I had improved the drainage enough but I gues not. I'm going back and planting in 10" deep rows, maybe that will help. Last year my corn was drowned by TS Fay. Not much you can do when you get 30" of rain in two days. The joy's of gardening in the tropics.
