i have limited sunny areas in my small urban lot....i just discovered the concept of potato towers, and thought i would build 2, one for "regular" potatoes, and one for "sweet potatoes...

will the same technique work for sweet potatoes as it does for regular potatoes in a tower?

lastly, where can i get slips?

Not sure about the towers, and since I don't know where you're located I can't suggest a place for you to buy slips. Click on Organic Businesses on the left of this page and look to see if there's an organic nursery in your area. I would call them and find out if they carry them. In Dallas, I would check with Redenta's or NorthHaven nurseries.

sweet potato slips were delivered last week (puerto ricans)... i have started a tower 24"dia 6x6 welded wire cage x 5' tall...ringed bottom 12" with newspaper, filled with leafy compost and soil...4 slips, 1 died and was replaced with a "spare" (i have planted the extra slips in the ground in the traditional fashion for comparison)

when these grow taller, i will add compost and more soil, lining cage with newspaper as it grows...

Dallas is supposed to be good sweet potato country, my section of Oak Cliff is alkaline clay and brittle limestone, so if the tower works i will be glad....much easier than digging new garden area.

i'll update here from time to time....

ok, method failure to report....the concept of a tower is good, but the choice of enclosure was bad...

i had a spare cage i used for tomatoes, (4x4 wire mesh) and lined with newspaper....the newspaper rotted, and the soil spilled...doh!

have not dug for harvest, but expect to see some small taters in the small mound that survived the spill

next year, i will try again, with something more permanent than newspaper...

I know this is an old topic, (hey, I'm just returning after a long absence!) but you can buy really nice sweet potato slips from Steele Plant Company sweetpotatoplant.com I haven't planted mine in a tower, just in raised beds, but they are doing well.
