Post subject: | Fall Planting of Blue Berries and Black Berries |
We live in San Angelo in West Texas and are in the process of converting a back yard (east exposure) for planting fruit trees and a vegetable garden. So far we have tllled up a portion and have been adding compost, cow manure, hariy vetch, and organic fertilier to build up the soil for a spring planting. Can blue berries and black berries be planted in late fall to get a root system started for the next year? We would be prepared to cover the plants if a hard freeze is anticipated. None of the nurseries out here stock plants for fall planting so would there be a source in the Metroplex or Austin/ San Antonio area? Comments and suggestions would be appreciated. Do you know what variety you're thinking of planting? What have you turned up from internet searches? |

Thank you for your response, and I appologize for the delay on answering your question. So far the local agricultural extension office has recommended Brazos, Womack and Rosborough for Blackberries; however, I have not yet found their recomendation on Blue Berries. None of the local nurseries are stocking either plant this time of year so I am open to suggestions on a good source for the West Texas climate and soil conditions. Thanks Schwartz |
