I've just been reading an article that shows how to grow tomatoes in a deep can/container. The thought occurred to me that if I got one deep enough, I could grow potatoes and/or carrots in a deep can and/or container. Has anyone ever done this? Could this be done? I, of course, wouldn't plant a bunch; I live alone & only want enough for myself. Comments/suggestions??? |

I tried growing potatoes in an aerated trash can one year. It does work but you have to stay with it weekly to make sure the plants don't suffocate and die. I have had great success over the years growing no-till potatoes by continuously mulching my potatoes with leaves and slightly undone compost. Always leave a little of the plants' foliage above the mulch so they don't die. I feed my potatoes compost tea recipes mixed with fish products too. The extra protein/nitrogen also helps break down the high carbon mulch around the potatoes, while feeding the soil microbes and earthworms in the beds. |
