I bought one last weekend without thinking, but it may be too late to put it out now. Can anyone tell me if it is worth the effort?

Thanks,

I asked the same question to a fellow gardener, who has lived here for years, and her response was that it's definitely not too late. By the end of the month, I wouldn't set any out. You can also wait until July (mid-July, perhaps?) to set out tomatoes for Fall. Also use this handy reference:

Heck yeah, it's a fine time to plant tomatoes! As far as planting new ones, I have brought mine through to fall the last few years by putting cornmeal in my soil at planting and foliar feeding every other week.

My cherry tomato plant lasted until November last year! Yours can too!

It's okay to put tomato plants out now, but don't be surprised or disappointed if you don't get any fruit until Fall. Tomatoes need specific temperature ranges to produce fruit, and when it gets really hot, they will stop producing. To increase your chances of summer fruits, go with the smaller tomato varieties and cherry types.

I second Kathe on the foliar feeding. It does wonders to the plants. They grow so much better and fuller. She convinced me to foliar feed. I try to do it once a week or no less then once every two weeks. This year I have seen more lady bugs in the garden and less harmful pests. I checked the garden tonight and saw a few small cucumbers. This is the earlest I have seen them. Must the delicious foliar feed. The plants get so much deeper green color as well.

Personally it is only to late for me to put anything out if I don't get it put out. The way Oklahoma weather is some years it pays some it don't.
