Will tomatos grow from old vine or only from new?

More explanation:
Can tomatos be cut back in late summer and will new growth come from the older vine or will it only come from end of the vine?

Is it beneficial to trim off large leaves from tomato plants?

I cut my tomatoes back last year and they did great. It was my first time to try that and so some I cut back too far and they died. put the ones that I left about six inches on the lower branches came back out and made the most wonderful productive plants. I had tomatoes until mid November.

Thanks for the tip. A coworker and I will try to do a little air laying and trimming about July or August. :)

I had tomatoes until mid-Nov. when we had our first freeze. I didn't do any pruning at all and they did continue to produce toward the ends of the branches.

In my opinion I wouldn't prune in July or August becuase that should be peak harvest time. I'd wait until maybe October to prune a little (if at all). I started harvesting on July 1st and they shut down a little in late Sept when it got so hot. By early Oct. when the temps cooled a tiny bit, they came back to life and produced until November.
