Post subject:  tomato varieties for Dallas

I'd like to grow some heirloom tomatoes, but I'm wondering if lack of disease resistance will be a problem here. I don't know which diseases are a problem in Dallas, so I'm not sure what's important to look for. Also, has anyone had any luck getting any of the heat tolerant varieties to produce during the hottest part of the summer?

I'm about an hour west of Dallas, but I have grown a few heirloom varieties, and they don't seem any more susceptible to diseases than our standard hybrid varieties. Cherokee Purple did great for me last year, and Green Zebrz (not sure if that's an heirloom or not, but not a common variety). Brandywine seems to stay alive, but did not produce well. A couple of years ago, I grew some Great White (actually a yellow tomato) and it held up well in the heat and survived early blight, plus it produced lots of fruit. I grew Aunt Ruby's German Green last year. It (like Brandywine) survived and looked beautiful, but was a very poor producer. Sungold is not an heirloom, but is an excellent cherry-type tomato that is vigorous, takes the heat, and produces like crazy. Definitely on my list for this year. Hope this helps a little.

I transplanted some Merced and Surefires and some Celebritys I started from seed the first week of August last year. Excellent results from all three, but this would be considered a fall garden. For a spring garden I would think the Merceds and the Surefires would produce later. Cant remember if they were determinate or not.
