I agree about the epsom salts - I mix it up in a bucket of water and pour it around in the tomatoes every few weeks and I haven't seen any this year. |

To secure tall, indeterminant tomatoes, we build what I call scaffolding. Basically, We get 4 7ft pieces of wood, or you can use metal stakes. Secure horizontal pieces as the tomato gets taller, so you can rest the branches on them. I always trim the bottom branches off, never allowing any of the branches or fruit to touch the ground. Yo can also plant the tomatoes next to a chain link fence, in the sun, and secure it to the fence as it grows. Even in the first example, my tomatoes went over the top and back down to the ground. |

I'd like to see that too! Mine are in 5' tall concrete reinforcing wire cages and the branches are tied six ways to Sunday to keep them from lopping over. But after the last few days of rain, the big indeterminates are now easily 8-9' tall and I have no idea what to do next. I was thinking of maybe placing multiple 10' fence posts in the ground around them and tying them to the posts. But I'm concerned about how much it will disturb their root systems, and if they're going to get 20' tall, what then???? |
