my green bush beans are nice and green, slow growing lately, how often should you fertirize to keep it going, it is out in the sun all day, hill country of texas |

I fertilize mine about every 3 weeks. I use a balanced, organic fertilizer and also use earthworm castings. If you've never grown legumes in that soil before, you may want to use an innoculant once to ensure it has the ability to take in nitrogen. |

We have these small light brown beetles eating our bush beans (mostly the leaves, which are binning to look like swiss cheese) but also eating the beans! They are about 3 or 4 ml long - very small and light brown in color - ???any idea what these might be? We have heirloom seeds planted, Roma, cherokee and some yellow wax beans. Do they move or hop out of the way? They might be flea beetles, though flea beetles are a little smaller than the size you suggest (they are about the size of a beefy flea). I get them on my eggplants. If you begin the season (or start before the season) with beneficial nematodes, that helps. I am using a mix of neem oil in water on the ground under some of my crops this year to see if I can disrupt the soil part of the flea beetle life cycle. Not all plants like or tolerate neem, so I'm not putting much on foliage this year (I clobbered peppers and squash last year by applying too liberally). |

they do look a little like very large fleas - will try the neem - they could care less about my garlic pepper tea! The cucumber beetles are back too! thanks! |

Only use Neem in early morning cause it may burn the plant if put on when hot. You can also use Spinosad. |

I would add to that morning advice by saying not only do it in the morning, but try it on one plant first and watch it for a couple of days to see if it tolerates neem. Spinosad is easier on plants in general. Just don't broadcast it. |
