Post subject:  advise for growing melons in raised beds

I'm planting one watermelon plant and enough for 2-4 cantaloupes (starting w/seed) in my raised garden beds (9'x4'x10"). Inside the bed, there's plenty of sun regardless of how and where I choose.

I was thinking of planting near the edge, and mulching the surrounding ground as the vine grows out and over. OR I could allow the plants to grow along the inside length of the bed, mulching accordingly. Either way, I estimate there is plenty of room.

Any advise on the best way to train the vines, however, I'd really appreciate.
thank you

Frankie

I used some 3' green fence stakes and put a piece of chickenwire between them. The cantaloupe grew all over it. It loves to climb.

Good thing you could figure out what I was saying - I just fixed a typo.

Yes, they love to climb and you'll see melons hanging from the vines when they do. They have grown higher near my outdoor unit of the heat pump where I put a chickenwire barrier (to prevent the basketball hitting it, there used to be a hoop nearby). It was a great way to conceal the big metal box - I put up posts and wire about a foot away from it on two sides and from the street all you would see was vines and cantaloupe peaking out.
