How often should I be watering plants like tomatoes and peppers?

If you can water deeply so that you're not watering every day you'll do your garden and your water bill a favor. I've had various methods (sprinklers, soaker hoses) over the years, but this year I'm going to mostly do hand-watering.

If you use a probe (like a golf club minus the head) and poke it into the ground you can feel if it gives, if it is moist or soggy, or dry or hard. Let a tool like that guide your watering. There are formulas, an inch of water every so often. But a sprinkler can miss spots, or make some areas really wet. So I'm controlling it more by using the hose with a large diffusing nozzle (like is on the end of a wand or some watering cans (so I send a gentle spray onto the garden).

Just put a soaker hose or drip system around your veggies and water every 3 days or so. It's really no different. They don't need to be watered daily, unless it's in a pot, and water deeply when you do water.

I used soaker hoses for years, but this year I took them out except around the foundation. Even with artful wrapping and positioning, I found that soaker hoses didn't get everything as wet as needed but it did make the garden paths between raised beds gooshy and more prone to be full of weeds. This year as an experiment I am hand watering mostly, with a couple of small area sprinklers that sometimes go into the gardens without raised beds.

The upside of hand-watering is that every two or three days I take a real good close look at everything, something I don't always do if I'm just turning on the spigot and a timer. I don't water the paths in the garden so I have fewer weeds there. I'm still going to have a high water bill, but I think it might be better than with the soaker hoses.

Everyone is different. Neither is better. Whatever works in each situation.
